Electrical installation, hardwiring and using lighting in another country

Who should install a GUBI lamp, whether it can be hardwired, and what to know before using it in another country or changing its cord or plug.

Who should install a GUBI lamp?

A qualified electrician, whenever the lamp is connected to the electrical installation rather than plugged into a socket. They install it following the lamp's assembly instructions and the electrical regulations where you live. Assembly instructions are in the Digital Showroom (gubi.presscloud.com/digitalshowroom).

Can a GUBI lamp be hardwired?

Pendants and ceiling lamps are hardwired as standard: a qualified electrician connects them to the electrical installation.

Several wall lamps come with a cable and plug and are prepared for hardwiring once the cable and plug are removed: the Bestlite wall lamps, and the Multi-Lite, Howard, Gravity, 9464 and Satellite wall lamps. The EU and UK versions are the same. As a rule, US wall lamps are hardwired, and the US versions of the Bestlite wall lamps have a different junction box, different wiring and their own instructions.

The Silk Lantern wall lamp is made with a cable only, because its base is too small to cover a standard wall outlet.

For any other lamp, our order team (order@gubi.com) confirms whether it can be hardwired; they need the product name. Hardwiring is always work for a qualified electrician.

Can I use a GUBI lamp in another country?

It depends on the lamp and the country. Most GUBI lighting is made in separate versions for different markets, because voltage, plug type and certification differ between them, and a version made for one market is not made for another, for example a lamp bought in the EU and used in the US. The rechargeable portable lamps are the exception: they all charge at 5 V and can be used in any country. For any other lamp you are buying for another country, choose the version sold in that country. For a lamp you already own, our order team (order@gubi.com) confirms whether it can be used in the country where you want to use it; they need the product name and the country.

Can I change the plug, cord or voltage of my lamp?

We do not recommend changing a lamp's electrical parts. It can affect how the lamp works and whether it is safe to use, and products modified after delivery are not covered by the product warranty. If you go ahead, have the work done by a qualified electrician, following local regulations. For replacement cords and parts, see Spare parts and replacement components.

Can I dim the Howard Pendant?

The Howard Pendant has no built-in dimmer. A dimmable bulb, or a bulb you control from an app, can sometimes dim it, but this is not guaranteed. Any change to the electrical installation is work for a qualified electrician.

Can the 1967 Pendant connect to an outlet that is not directly above it?

Yes. The canopy connects to a ceiling outlet and has a cable opening in the side, so the cable can also run to an outlet further away.

Where can I find a lamp's electrical specifications?

On the lamp's product page at gubi.com, under Electrical Specifications: the bulb type, whether a bulb is included, whether the lamp is dimmable, and its voltage. The datasheet in the Digital Showroom (gubi.presscloud.com/digitalshowroom) has the same details for each product.

Anything not answered here, our order team (order@gubi.com) can answer.
